Pilgrim Building Company constructs custom homes in the Austin area. The homes we build are typically designed by architects and utilize green technologies. Architect-designed homes are highly compatible with green technologies as they maintain similar values: smart design, efficiency, beautiful craftsmanship and coherence among the home’s elements. My own training as a cabinetmaker and woodworker also adds craftsmanship and attention to finish details throughout the home.

There are technologies present today that offer a better building in its material, energy and resource usage, and material palate. We are also drawn to systems that are not dependant on a series of layers (i.e. studs>drywall>trim>paint>etc) namely these are such building types as Strawbale, Adobe, Rammed earth, Aerated Concrete Block and Structural Insulated Panels. We are eager to build innovative designs with these building systems.

It is a popular belief that green homes are drastically more expensive. In our experience, green homes are not more expensive than other well designed custom homes. In many cases, green technologies have actually lowered both the cost of construction as well as the home’s operating costs. There are also many less quantitative advantages to building and promoting a green home, namely health and air quality issues.
