A new residence on a Tarrytown infill lot. After deconstructing the existing house, Pilgrim Building Co. drilled 38 piers to an average depth of 30’ into the limestone bedrock to create a robust foundation to compensate for expansive soils. The new home is a modern design with large glass storefront and Fleetwood doors. The exterior veneer is Lueders Limestone, integral stucco and cypress siding. The cypress wood, has been finished using a shou-su-ghi-ban technique. Essentially the wood was burned, then cleaned then oil-sealed to use the burned protective carbon coating as the finish. The home also has a modest pool and detached cabana. clean and minimalist interior details and material palate complete the design.

This infill lot located just a few blocks from Town Lake is the site of a modern SIP home. The layout of this 2 bedroom 2.5 bath is around a central courtyard. Natural light is abundant through the commercial grade windows and high transoms. The walls and roof are constructed of 6”, 8” and 10” structural insulated panels. The exterior veneer is a three coat stucco with integral color, with a courtyard that is veneered in 1X6 Angelim (Brazilian Hardwood) rain screen. Plate steel and storefront windows and doors complete the exterior. The interior floors are select Texas Mesquite, and the cabinets have a conversion varnish paint applied to them for a highly durable and clean finish. Materials and design attention were focused in the kitchen and master bath with a rich material palette. An elegant steel staircase dominates the hallway bridging the public areas to the private bedrooms.

Architect: Davis Architecture

This lovely historic home in Castle Hills was built in the middle of the 1800s. The house itself is of stone construction using the building methods of the time and building materials that were found in abundance on the land. A wooden form was made for the walls where stones, mud, and straw were poured into the forms. Layer by layer the structure was formed that is still standing today.

Pilgrim will be taking the house down to its original structure, repairing discrepancies (using stone, mud, and straw methods), and coating the house in vintage plaster. There will be an addition of a back porch, hardwood floors, a water retaining system and a solar array.

Recognizing the site’s potential, the clients and architect capitalized on previously missed opportunities while transforming the inefficient 5000sf home int a high-performance sustainable structure.

The materials palate includes rich, sequenced, vertical grain walnut veneer in the kitchen, dining room, library and media/bar cabinet. There is a three coat, portland based, plaster “massing” wall that is also the main bearing wall running through the middle of the house diving the kitchen/living and the library/stairwell with segmented, walnut portals between. The floors are select, rift and quarter sawn, white oak that is lightened slightly and given a waterborne sealer to give a maintenance free finish. The intent here was to get the finished color as close to raw white oak as possible. Windows are Marvin Ultimate casements and awnings and the natural light is fantastic! Counter tops are Black Zimbabwe honed granite and “Blizzard” Caeserstone in master bath areas. Exterior decking is oiled Cumuru. The stairs and upper guard rail are made of welded 5/8″ plate steel, treads clad with white oak.

This was a renovation of a 1950’s home that incorporated a new kitchen with breakfast nook, living room, powder bath, and dining room. The floors were replaced with a honed lueders limestone, which was matched to the new hardscape installed by Mark Word Design. The painted cabinets were finished with a conversion varnish and the central core of the kitchen is comprised of vertical tapered walnut slats, which form the enclosures for the refrigerator, ovens and pantry as well as other walnut cabinets. A built in seating area with walnut table are also featured. The countertops are Ceasarstone as is the material used in the integral sink in the powder bath. Custom siding and doors made of cypress give the project a muted texture. The entry door is a custom pivot door with partially obscured glass. Mark Word Design added terracing and steps for the approaches that use both leuders stone and steel to form the steps and terraces. A floating deck of Angelium extends off the master bedroom.
